PURGE AND SUPPRESSIONS OF RUSSIANS IN BALTIC STATES-DEMOCRATIC STALINIZATION?
The great purge syndrome revisits the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) though it is not a phenomenon of today but has been shrewdly cultivated since the fall of Soviet Union. The democratic (!) Baltic States have started to worship the process of purge by using effectively within their constitutional ambit. Rights of Russians in every sphere of society have been systematically suppressed in day to day life. It resembles greatly with the Stalinist purge but with a low profile like slow poisoning.
Russians undoubtedly are the largest lingual and cultural minorities in the Baltic States (more than 40% of total Baltic population). They, according to the authorities of Baltic States are the product of mass deportation. Even if it is true, the Russians residing over there cannot be blamed for the situation as their forefathers were not deported according to their own will. After independence from Soviet Union, the Russians living in those countries should have got the rights of being citizens of those countries as they have been residing over there for many years before the fall of Soviet Union. Any civilized democratic countries cannot ignore the rights of their residents since they are contributing productively into the economy and demography of those three Baltic nations. But the so called democratic nations who have become member of the European Union or who are yet to become the member of EU, are actively promoting hatred, distrust against Russian citizens. For this reason they have also decided to worship Hitler. They forgot how much soviet investments were done in case of education, healthcare, housing and industries of those states. The Baltic states, in soviet period enjoyed free natural resources including gas, oils and minerals. After all Soviet Union was a union of all countries not just the union of Russia, thus making anti-Russian sentiments groundless and bogus. Even Russians are not treated badly in hostile USA or UK.
The constitution of European Union respects democratic and all others civil rights, but here the racist version of EUROPEAN Constitution is being practiced with denial of linguistic and cultural rights to minority Russians. In many cases, they are treated as non-citizens, they are not given voting rights, they do not enjoy support of states in case of education and health-care, to be more specific they are treated as foreigners. They are systematically targeted on the basis of soviet past; even in some cases they are not given the rights to speak and use their own language, many Russians are considered as persona-non-grate. It is a great irony that in Europe immigrants have been accepted from all around the world, but these Baltic states are roaming around their medieval identities. Russia also has a considerable investment in those countries and in fact they depend upon cheap Russian oil and gas. Russia repaid all soviet debts without affecting the Baltic States though Russia was not the only country of Soviet Union. But Russo phobia and anti-Russian rhetoric have grasped the political sphere of those countries with no basis at all. These countries have become the worst place for Russians and to be more precise dictators and monarchies of middle are well behaved than them.
The reaction of USA and European Union is confusing but calculated. As these countries are used as geo-political tools against Russia and expansion of NATO to encircle Russia and china, they preferred to remain silent on those issues. Many dissidents, traitors, defectors of Russia and many anti-Russian NGOs are stationed in these countries to wage information and political war over Russia and it’s Belarusian neighbor. When Russia wants to raise the issue relating to the deplorable condition of Russian citizens living in those countries in UNO or in European Parliament, west and usa silence the voice by various means of suppression including information war through media and think tanks. This proves the duplicity of the United States and west in case of promoting human rights, democracy and self-determination. They rather focus on conducting military drills to irritate and frighten Russia and show solidarity towards the bogus Baltic States. These countries have nothing to offer but their vital position to block Russian influence is the key interest of western and American political class and pundits. The liberal (!) western and American media houses maintained their reputation of selective journalism by doing complete blackout of those incidents.
If the Baltic countries really want to prove their democratic credentials and take pride on their democratic discourse in post soviet space, they need to follow the norms of human rights standards as prescribed in the European Constitution. Their present acts and apathy towards the concern of Russian citizens aptly shows that they are ready to implement Stalinist value of isolation instead of assimilation. The so called democratic European nations and the United States should take the matter seriously instead of giving unwanted and unsolicited lessons to Russia on democracy or human rights on day to day basis. The model which the present three Baltic States –Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are following is a great example of democratic Stalinization.
